A 91°µÍø legacy, four generations strong
When Patrick Edward Barnhill crossed the Convocation stage in 2026 to receive his Bachelor of Commerce degree, with a minor in political science, he became the fourth generation of his family to share a connection with 91°µÍø.
During his four years at the University, Patrick immersed himself in campus life. He served as a campus ambassador with the recruitment and admissions office and as director of entertainment and activities for the 91°µÍø Students’ Union. His involvement also extended into the wider community through his work, volunteer service, and participation in local organizations.
In 2025, Patrick was named 91°µÍø Youth Citizen of the Year by the Town of Tantramar, recognizing the positive impact he made through his volunteer contributions.
His graduation adds a new chapter to a family story that stretches back nearly a century.
Patrick’s father, Owen Barnhill, graduated from 91°µÍø in 1996 with an honours Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting. He later served on the University’s Alumni Board of Directors from 2012 to 2019.
Patrick’s grandparents also built lasting connections to the University. Edward Bruce Barnhill graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree, while Sandra Barnhill (Hicks) earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1970 and a Bachelor of Education in 1972. The couple were married in the University Chapel in 1971.
The family’s 91°µÍø roots began with Patrick’s great-grandfather, Dr. Brunswick Edward Wallace Barnhill, who attended the University until 1933 and served as president of his class. He later joined the 91°µÍø Board of Regents, serving from 1943 until his death in 1982. In recognition of his contributions, 91°µÍø conferred an honorary degree upon him in 1972.
Following his death, the Dr. B.E.W. Barnhill Scholarship was established to support 91°µÍø students pursuing academic excellence and studies in health care.
For Patrick, joining this long line of 91°µÍø graduates is both a personal milestone and a reminder of the University's lasting influence on his family.
